ישנן טכניקות תפירה מסויימות שמהוות בסיס לעבודה נוחה ומתאימה בשביל המון טכניקות טלאים אחרות, מודרניות ומסורתיות כאחת. אפליקציה ועבודה על הבסיס נייר, למשל, הן שיטות לחיבור בדים שאינן בהכרח תפירה רגילה של שתי קצוות בד. תפורי מכונה ותפורי יד, לעומת זאת, הן שיטות "קווילטינג" ודקורציה לעבודת טלאים בשלבי הסיום שלה.

There are some sewing techniques that are basic for a comfortable quilting process for many different kinds of patterns, modern and traditional alike. Applique and paper piecing, for instance, are both fabric piecing techniques that do not necessarily involve sewing the edges of two fabrics together as usual. Machine and hand quilting, on the other hand, are methods of quilting and decoration for a quilt when it is almost finished.
